FG: Tinubu's Administration Cannot Promise Unaffordable Wages

The Federal Government has stated that President Bola Tinubu's administration cannot commit to a wage increase that is not economically feasible. Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, made this clear in a Channels Television interview on Wednesday.

Commitment to Healthcare Workforce

While acknowledging the dedication of healthcare workers, Pate emphasized the government's commitment to improving their welfare and wages. The government has approved training opportunities for some healthcare professionals abroad, with the expectation that they will return to Nigeria after completing their training.

Wage Review

The government has made submissions to the Salary Incomes and Wages Commission for an adjustment in the remuneration of healthcare workers as part of the ongoing wage review. However, Pate stressed that any wage increase must be grounded in economic reality, noting that "you cannot give what you don't have."

Legacy Issues

The minister highlighted that some promises made in the past remain unfulfilled due to economic constraints. He emphasized the importance of making realistic commitments, citing President Tinubu's commitment to the welfare of Nigerian workers and his championing of health resources in the African Union.

Minimum Wage Review

This statement comes after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) deferred a minimum wage review memo for further consultations. President Tinubu had earlier assured organized labor that an executive bill on the new national minimum wage would be sent to the National Assembly for passage. The President is expected to decide on the proposed ₦62,000 minimum wage and Labour's demand for ₦250,000.
